Road Rides from Trasvía

Twelve rides from the front door for a strong rider — coastal rollers over the rías, near-empty cols in the Nansa and Saja valleys, and the long road through the La Hermida gorge into the Picos de Europa. Saturday afternoon 15 – Tuesday 18 August 2026: weekdays out from 06:00 and home by 15:00, Sunday for the big one.

1000 m TRASVÍA PANES POTES FUENTE DÉ 1101

The queen stage, drawn to scale: Trasvía → Fuente Dé, ≈80 km one-way. Flat to Panes, false-flat through the gorge to Potes, then 22.7 km up the Liébana — the last 3 km after Espinama ramp toward 9%.

Weather, the weekday box & the smart order

The four days

The window: Saturday afternoon to a ~17:00 departure on Tuesday 18. Weekday rule — rolling as early as 06:00, home by 15:00; that box fits everything except the big days, which need the one full day: Sunday. Forecast: AEMET, refreshed 14 Aug 21:03.

Sat 15 Aug Holiday · PM only

20–25 °C · storms/rain to midday, drying 12–18 (25%)
shower risk returns evening (60%)
wind NW 15 km/h · sun 07:21–21:22

Afternoon opener. Once the roads dry (~13:00): the Carmona loop (3–4 h) — inland and empty while the holiday coast is jammed — or the Ruiloba Ring if the sky looks short. Shops are shut today.

Sun 16 Aug

20–25 °C · light rain likely before midday (80%), clearing after (20%)
wind N 10 km/h · sun 07:22–21:21

The whole-day ride. Fuente Dé, Piedrasluengas, or Ozalba + Hoz. The morning rain is forecast escasa (light) — roll by 08:00 anyway; the afternoon dries.

Mon 17 Aug

19–26 °C · rain 65% before midday, 0% after
wind NE 15 km/h · sun 07:23–21:19

The gamble morning. If dawn is dry, Palombera fits the 06:30→15:00 box with margin. If the early showers land, wait them out and take the Fuentona Espresso Run or East Rollers from ~10:00.

Tue 18 Aug Home by 15:00

19–25 °C · rain 10% — best sky of the window
wind NE 20 km/h (breezy) · sun 07:24–21:18

Best forecast, last morning (departure ~17:00). Carmona or Palombera on a 06:30 start; Ozalba + Hoz only if rolling by 06:00 — it gets home ~13:30.

Forecast is a snapshot — recheck at AEMET Comillas (id 39024) each morning, and the gorge road status at obrasn621.es before any Picos ride.

Big days

Every big day funnels through the Desfiladero de La Hermida — 20 km of limestone gorge on the N-621, rebuilt and widened for cyclists in works finished summer 2025, with no closures in force on 14 Aug. Lights for the short tunnels, early starts to beat the tourist wave. These need the full day — with the 15:00 weekday ceiling, they're Sunday rides.

Best daySun 16 The only day long enough. Roll by 08:00 to beat the gorge wave.
  • Lights required: short tunnels in the gorge — front white + rear red is the law in tunnels.
  • Gorge traffic triples in summer (baseline ~2,500 vehicles/day) — start ≤08:00 and be back through the narrows before the midday wave. Fuente Dé is the busiest climb here (rider votes: "ok", not "great"); mornings are calmer.
  • Good news The 17.2 km widening of the gorge road was finished summer 2025, explicitly built to make the road usable by cyclists — pull-outs and wider carriageway throughout.

Rules of the road

  • Helmet: compulsory on interurban roads (exceptions: prolonged climbs, extreme heat, medical grounds).
  • Two abreast is legal on the open road — single out on blind curves and when traffic stacks up.
  • Being passed: drivers owe you ≥1.5 m, a full lane change on multi-lane roads, and a 20 km/h speed reduction — ride assuming they don't know this.
  • Shoulder: use the arcén where it exists and is rideable; otherwise take what carriageway you need.
