The three big monuments (El Capricho, Palacio de Sobrellano, Seminario Mayor) sit within a few hundred meters of each other, 2–3 km from Trasvía. Important: Sobrellano and the Seminario do not sell same-day tickets online — book the day before at centros.culturadecantabria.com, or take your chances at the box office.

Free walking tours

Three tip-based tours cover the town's golden triangle — El Capricho, Sobrellano, the Pontificia — from different angles, all departing from around Plaza de la Constitución. Free to book; tip the guide in cash.

English: no guaranteed English departures exist this week — the Civitatis English listing's booking calendar is empty for these dates and every GuruWalk slot is listed as Spanish. Elia's tour is "occasionally bilingual" per its Civitatis page: if you need English, book hers and message ahead.

The real cave: the old Friday lottery no longer exists — original-cave access is limited to a long-closed waiting list, so the Neocueva replica is the visit (and it's excellent).
  • The museum itself recommends booking ahead online in summer; August slots sell out. For the free Sat-afternoon/Sunday entry, queue at the desk early (tickets from 09:30).
  • Neocueva entry reportedly runs in groups of ~20 every ~25 min Third-party.

Rasa mareal — the low-tide coastal walk

At low tide the sea peels back off a flat rocky platform of folded, layered strata between Comillas and Oyambre: tide pools full of crabs, urchins, anemones and the odd octopus. This week's spring tides expose it exceptionally well.

RouteDrop onto the platform at Playa de Comillas and head west toward the Ría de La Rabia and Oyambre; ~4–5 km one way. Clifftop path (Senda Costera, ~5.5 km circular) runs parallel as an escape/return route.

Safety: go out on the falling tide and be off the rocks within ~1.5–2 h after low — with coefficients this high the flood comes back fast and can cut you off against the cliffs. Closed non-slip shoes; skip it in swell or rain. If the tide catches you, climb to the Senda Costera clifftop path.
  • At the Oyambre end look for the retreating dune front (~1.3 m/yr), occasionally exposed ~5,000-year-old tree stumps, and the "Pájaro Amarillo" monument to a 1929 transatlantic flight's emergency landing.
  • Heights are relative to mean sea level (that's why lows are negative). Sunrise ~07:20, sunset ~21:20 all four days.

Tides verified 13 Aug 2026 on tablademareas.com (Comillas), cross-checked with tides4fishing.com (San Vicente) — sources agree within 1 min / 0.1 m.

Thursday to Sunday, tide-aware

Suggested plan

Built around three fixed points: the 11:30 walking tours end ~13:00 and clash with the 12:30 English tour at El Capricho (so English Capricho slots are always the 16:30); Sobrellano and the Seminario sell no same-day online tickets; and the low-tide walk window slides ~40 min later each day. Sobrellano is closed Mondays — this week that only matters if you stay past Sunday.

Thursday 13 — settle in, tides & Gaudí

  • 09:45–13:15 Rasa mareal low-tide walk (low 11:35) or a first morning at Playa de Oyambre.
  • Midday Book ahead online for the rest of the stay: Sobrellano (Friday is nearly sold out), Seminario, Altamira, Capricho — and a Fuente Dé slot if you want the Picos (online sales close 24 h ahead and August slots sell out days early).
  • 16:30 El Capricho — English guided tour.
  • 17:30 / 19:30 Elia's free walking tour (Moncho's 18:00 as alternative).
  • 21:00 Caprichos Musicales closing gala at El Espolón (box-office tickets) — or "Las Noches del Café La Perla" at El Capricho, 21:15. Tonight is the festival's last night.

Friday 14 — market & monuments (or El Soplao)

  • 09:00–14:00 Friday market at the Campa de Sobrellano — 30+ stalls below the palace.
  • 10:15 Seminario Mayor guided tour, then the grounds and the view.
  • 12:18 Low tide — short platform wander below the town, or beach time.
  • 16:10 Sobrellano guided tour (satisfies the 90–120 min spacing rule; book the moment you can — Friday had 1-seat sessions on 13 Aug).
  • 17:30 Alternative: Emilio's 2 h storytelling tour — his only departure this week.
  • 22:30 Carlos Núñez at the Seminario church (the 20:00 show is sold out); free shuttle from La Portalada.
  • All day Swap: El Soplao (~30 min drive) — book the tourist visit online a day ahead; fleece required.

Saturday 15 — holiday crowds, go early or local

  • 10:10 Sobrellano tour + 12:45 Seminario tour — the pairing that satisfies the spacing rule; or take the 11:30 free walking tour instead.
  • 11:00–14:45 Low-tide window (low 12:59) if you skipped the tours.
  • 16:30 El Capricho English tour (the 12:30 clashes with everything above).
  • Evening Oyambre for sunset; Elia's 19:30 walk, or "Grandes éxitos" at the Seminario, 22:00.

Sunday 16 — Altamira free day & last tide

  • 09:15 Drive to Altamira — free all Sunday, desk-only tickets from 09:30, so arrive at opening; then wander Santillana del Mar.
  • 11:45–15:20 Back for the last (and latest) low-tide window (low 13:39), or lunch in Santillana.
  • Afternoon La Portilla's first open day of the season — ~70 min guided visit of the indiano mansion, 12 EUR, booking essential.
  • 17:30 Elia's walking tour — the only guide running Sunday.
  • 22:00 Free open-air send-off: "La última y nos vamos", Plaza de la Constitución.
  • All day Big-mountain swap: Teleférico de Fuente Dé (~1 h 20 drive) — needs a timed slot booked by Friday; leave early for the 08:00–09:00 cabins and lunch in Potes on the way back.
  • Note Sobrellano's Sunday hours are shorter (last tour 17:10); Monday it's closed — Capricho (daily) and the Seminario (Mon–Sat) are the Monday options if you stay on.
